SL Modem Family |
Wintec's newest embedded modem family sports a new form factor of 0.9 inch x 1.4 inch (22.86 mm x 35.56 mm). The new design is one of the smallest on the market and meets global telephone line standards with built-in safety devices. The Wintec SL modems utilizes Silicon Laboratory's newest generation of the ISO modem chipset with up to V.92/V.44 protocol.
Tailored to meet customers' needs, several models of the Wintec SL modem are available and specified by a SL24xxSy-z part number, where "xx" indicates the modem speed; the "y" identifies Nordic (y = E) and non-Nordic (y = U) country models; and the "z" denotes commercial (z = C) and industrial grade (z = I).
The SL's ability to support the external clock and EEPROM chip allows for further customization and tailoring.

Commercial and Industrial Grades: |
Wintec offers commercial and industrial graded modems. The commercial grade operates in the 0°C to 70°C ambient temperature range while the industrial grade permits operation between -40°C and 85°C range. |

Outstanding Features: |
Besides the programmability to meet global telephone line interface requirements, the SL24xxSy-z modems have the following features: |
Hardware escape and interrupt:
The built-in hardware interrupt (INT#) and escape (ESC) pins on SL24xxSU/SE module enable fast response to external event, which is desirable for timing critical application such as point-of-sales (POS) devices. In addition, the INT# pin can be used to indicate the FIFO status or to detect off-hook intrusion, etc. |
| |
Support the use of external clock:
This provides an option to reduce modem cost and modem height by eliminating the crystal on modem. |
| |
Optional EEPROM:
The optional EEPROM chip enables users to implement special communication protocols, to customize own AT command set, or to perform firmware/revision upgrade in the field. |
| |
Built-in safety devices:
In non-Nordic models the Fuse and SiDactor are built-in and in Nordic models the SiDactor and crossbar device are built-in. Users no longer need to add any external safety device in integrating modem into systems. |
| |
DSP based hardware modem:
The built-in hardware interrupt (INT#) and escape (ESC) pins on SL24xxSU/SE module enable fast response to external event, which is desirable for timing critical application such as point-of-sales (POS) devices. In addition, the INT# pin can be used to indicate the FIFO status or to detect off-hook intrusion, . etc. |
| |
Over-voltage and current protection, up to 70V and 200mA:
The over-current protection is to protect the modem from being accidentally plugged into a digital phone line. Many digital PBX lines have a low impedance, high current voltage source cross the two terminals of an RJ-11 jack which is normally the TIP and RING on an analog phone line. When an analog modem is plugged into a digital line, excessive current is drawn, which can damage the hook switch components. The Wintec modem can detect the over-current condition to generate an interrupt to the host to force the modem into high impedance mode or on-hook before any damage can occur. |
| |
Parallel phone detection and caller ID detection:
The Wintec modem can detect when another telephone, modem or other device is using the phone line. It can also detect the first burst ring and echo it to the host for caller ID decoding. |
| |
Lowest Power consumption:
The nominal operating current is only 26mA at 3.3V supply. In addition, SL24xxSy-z modems can enter the sleep state after a pre-programmed time of inactivity to save power. It awakes on ring. |
| |
Power down mode:
Once the Power Down (PDN) bit in the control register is written, the modem will enter power down mode. It can be powered back through the assertion of RESET# pin. |
| |
Automatic baud rate detection (auto-baud):
The auto-baud feature allows the host to start transmitting data at any standard DTE rate from 300bps to 307.2Kbps. This feature is enabled by default. The automatic fallback to match far-end communication speed from 56Kbps to 300 bps. This feature is also enabled by default. |
| |
5V tolerant I/O at the modem interface to the host. |
