SLM Embedded Modem Family 3rd Generation |
Wintec's SLM Series of Embedded modems is now available, incorporating the newest 3rd generation SIlicon Labs newest generation if ISOmodem chipset with up to V.92/V.44 protocol. This series keeps the existing popular SLM footprint of 1.0"x2.0".
The SLM24xx modems use Silicon Laboratory's ISOmodem chipset and can operate in either parallel or serial mode. The SLM modems are available in either commercial or industrial grade. All embedded modems have automatic fallback capability down to 300 bps. Within the SLM modem family, the maximum downstream connect rate, 56kbps, 33.6kbps, 14.4kbps, or 2.4kbps, is indicated by the "xx" model designation.

Outstanding Features: |
Besides the programmability to meet global telephone line interface requirements, the SL24xxSy-z modems have the following features: |
Hardware escape and interrupt:
The built-in hardware interrupt (INT#) and escape (ESC) pins on SLM24xx module enable fast response to external event, which is desirable for timing critical application such as point-of-sales (POS) devices. In addition, the INT# pin can be used to indicate the FIFO status, off-hook intrusion, or other interrupt requests. |
| |
Built-in safety devices:
Fuse and SiDactor are built-in; there is no need to add any external safety device in integrating the SLM embedded modems into systems. |
| |
DSP based hardware modem:
Faster than soft modems, which rely on the computing power of system processors to emulate the communication protocols. |
| |
Over-voltage and current protection, up to 70V and 200mA:
The over-current protection is to protect the modem from being accidentally plugged into a digital phone line. Many digital PBX lines have a low impedance, high current voltage source cross the two terminals of an RJ-11 jack which is normally the TIP and RING on an analog phone line. When an analog modem is plugged into a digital line, excessive current is drawn, which can damage the hook switch components. The Wintec modems can detect the over-current condition to generate an interrupt to the host to force the modem into high impedance mode or on-hook before any damage can occur. |
| |
Parallel phone detection and caller ID detection:
The Wintec modem can detect when another telephone, modem or some other device is using the phone line. It can also detect the first burst ring and echo it to the host for caller ID decoding. |
| |
Power down mode:
Once the Power Down (PDN) bit in the control register is written, the modem will enter power down mode. It can be powered back through the assertion of RESET# pin. |
| |
Automatic baud rate detection (auto-baud):
The auto-baud feature allows the host to start transmitting data at any standard DTE rate from 300bps to 307.2Kbps. This feature is enabled by default, as is the automatic fallback to match far-end communication speed from 56Kbps to 300 bps. |
| |
5V tolerant I/O at the modem interface to the host. |

Compliance to Global Telephone Standards: |
Wintec's SLM embedded modems meet the homologation requirements for:
• FCC Part 68 and FCC Part 15
• Australia ACIF Certified
• CTR21
• IC-CS03
• UL Certification and CE Marking |

Evaluation Board: |
A companion evaluation board is available for evaluating the functionality of the Wintec SLM embedded modems. The board can accept power through either a DC power supply jack or a USB port. On board are dual RJ-11 jacks, a DB-9 connector, three LED indicators for Transmit, Receive, and Ring Indicator/Interrupt, modem reset switch, and a socket for the SLM modem. The printed circuit board size is 2.75 inch by 5.0 inch.
